WTA Executive / Council PD Opportunity

The Winnipeg Teachers’ Association is looking to develop capacity of both Executive and Council members. In an effort to do so, the WTA has put aside funds to provide the following workshops. It is hoped that this will allow members to learn new skills which will help them in their professional and personal lives. It is also hoped that members who participate in these sessions will bring these skills to their work in the Winnipeg Teachers Association.

Crucial Conversations Workshop

  • Dates               : January 13th-14th ,2020 ( Monday/Tuesday)
  • Time                : 9 AM to 3:30 PM
  • Location          : McMaster House 191 Harcourt St. (MTS building)
  • Fee                  : $300 (Paid for by the Winnipeg Teachers’ Association)
  • Substitutes      : Cost of substitutes will be provided by the Winnipeg Teachers’ Association.
  • Lunch              : Coffee and lunch will be provided.
  • Participants     : 25

Participants will learn to skillfully and respectfully get results and strengthen relationships when stakes are high, emotions are strong, and opinions are opposing.

Topics: how to identify crucial conversations; recognize why and how avoidance damages the relationship; stay focused on healthy motives; manage emotions and stress to stay in healthy dialogue; use a framework to say risky things in a way that minimizes defensiveness; stay focused in the conversation to recognize risks and restore safety; create mutual purpose to manage conflicts; listen attentively and remained curious; and move from conversation to action.

Crucial Conversations 2.0: Reflection and Follow-up Workshop

  • Dates               : February 15th, 2020 (Saturday)
  • Time                : 9 AM to 3:30 PM
  • Location          : McMaster House 191 Harcourt St. ( MTS building)
  • Fee                  : No fee, but you must have attended both days of the January session.
  • Lunch              : Coffee and lunch will be provided.
  • Participants     : 25

A follow up session available to any previous participant of the MTS/WTA Crucial Conversations workshop. The purpose of the session is to further skills practice and reflect with other Crucial Conversations learners about how to use the model more effectively.

Presenter Sarah Gazan

Sarah is a staff officer and licensed Crucial Conversations facilitator in the Professional and French language services Department of the Manitoba Teachers’ Society. Her work focuses on developing and delivering professional learning experiences for educators with particular emphasis on Indigenous education, cultural proficiency, antiracism, collaborative cultures and using data to inform practice. She has worked as a middle years teacher as well as an aerial policy and program development within and outside of education.

Application and Selection Process

If you are interested in applying, you are committing to attend the three days.

The selection process for participation in this workshop is as follows

  • Space will first be allocated to the Executive members of the Winnipeg Teachers Association.
  • Space will then be provided to Council Representatives based on a random draw.
  • Finally, space will be allocated to Council Alternates based on a random draw process.

It is important to note that if you wish to participate, the WTA is asking you to commit to attending all three days. In the event individuals are unable to attend prior to the January sessions the next person on the waiting list will be contacted to take their place.
