2. Q.

How does sick leave accumulate?

  A.

At the start of each school year, full-time teachers receive 20 days (pro-rated for part-time teachers). These days are added to the days remaining from the previous year to a maximum of 145 days. Your total remaining sick days are shown on each monthly pay statement.

3. Q.

What should I do if I’m injured on the job?

  A.

Seek medical assistance. If the injury causes you to miss days of work, a doctor’s certificate is necessary. At your earliest convenience, document the incident by completing a WSD Accident Report which is available at the school office. For information on how to recoup lost sick time, please call the WTA office, 831-7104.

6. Q.

How do I access religious holy leave?

  A.

WTA members are entitled up to 3 days of paid religious holy leave. “For teachers requiring religious holy leaves prior to October 15th, ten (10) working days’ notice in writing shall be given to the Division, for teachers requiring religious holy days October 15th or later, notice in writing of leave required for that school year shall be given by September 30th.”(WTA C.A. pg 28)

7. Q.

What is the Disability Benefit Plan (DBP) and how does it work?

  A.

“The Plan (under the direction of Manitoba Teachers’ Society) is dedicated to assisting members through periods of disability in a manner that will attempt to assure, in a consultative approach, maximum rehabilitation both medically and vocationally to assist the members, when possible, to return to work, while providing the disabled member with financial security at a cost that is reasonable to the premium-paying member.” (From MTS DBP Mission Statement).

To access the plan a member must first use all of their accumulated sick time provided by the WSD. After being away for 10 sick days, the WSD will notify the DBP and a Case Manager will be assigned. The individual will work with the Case Manager and the member’s doctor to determine eligibility for access to the DBP. If eligible, the waiting period to receive a benefit for the DBP is a minimum of 80 working days. If an individual has less then 80 accumulated sick days, there will be a period of time the member will be without a salary.

The benefit paid by the DBP while on the plan is 80% of net salary.

8. Q.

How do I join the ManuLife plan?

  A.

Since September, 2004, membership in the plan has been compulsory for all new hires with a permanent contract of 33% or greater unless the person could demonstrate comparable insurability.

Provisions also exist for an individual to opt into the plan if they experience a life event. These include a marriage (including common-law after 12 months cohabitation); legal separation/divorce; birth, legal guardianship, or adoption of the first eligible child; death of a spouse or dependent child; termination of a common-law relationship; or involuntary loss of coverage under spouse’s benefit plan (does not include retirement).  In all cases enrolment must occur within 90 days of the life event.
